We had a great time hanging out with friends and celebrating the marriage of close friends.

In all her pool gear with dad.

Hanging out with her buds in the crib

Trying rice cereal for the first time

4 Months

After a nice 2 week Christmas break, we're back to our work routine. We're pretty much in bed by 10:30 most nights and up by 5am most mornings (well Leo is anyway). What a change this has been to our schedule. I'm such a night owl so this has been the biggest change for me. There are still nights where I'm wired and can't sleep so I'm up until midnight or later and then regretting it at 6 am the next morning.

K's growing really well! her cheeks are exponentially bigger.. they're out of control! when you look at her profile - all you see are cheeks, can't even see her nose. They've seriously taken over... our friends 3 yr old son looked at her the other day and said "Whoa, baby K has no neck!" we tried to show him her neck but of course her cheeks were in the way so he didn't believe us. as far as he's concerned, she's got no neck!!

K had her 4 month check up today. She's developing and growing well. here's a quick snapshot:
Height: 24 in (25-50th percentile)
Weight: 14 lbs 12 oz (75th percentile)
Head: 16.5 in

-Can grasp at things
-Can follow an item with her eyes
-Smiles at people
-Looks people in the eye
-Holds her head up very well, she loves her Bumbo and sits in it very well
-Discovering her legs (we think she'll start turning this month)
-Coos and babbles all the time

K and her infamous cheeks

Christmas Day 2009

Kaitlyn experienced her first snow storm on Christmas Eve in Texas of all places. Peggy and I spent a week visiting Peggy's parents down in Plano and last night we were in the mood for some real BBQ. Apparently, Rudy's (some gooood bbq)was open until 10pm. It began to snow pretty violently outside, so I called Rudy's to see if they were open on Christmas day (I mean, movie theaters are open, why not restaurants?). They were not. Since we were going to leave town the day after Christmas, if we wanted barbeque, Christmas eve would have to be it. We took out the SUV and braved the roads.

Now, I'm an experienced snow driver. Growing up in Wisconsin, I can deal with snow and ice. The only thing is that Texas drivers don't know a whole lot about driving in these conditions, so people make some stupid moves. We had a close call when a car in front of me totally hit the gas and spun out into my lane. Idiot. Good thing we had anti-lock brakes.

Needless to say, we made it to Rudy's and brought home some good food. In retrospect, we probably should not have gone out in the first place. It was way windy and way icy. What should have taken us 20 minutes there and 20 minutes back took us two hours round trip. Jenny, Peggy's sister, said, "I told you so."

Well, in other news, this morning, I woke up at 5 to feed Kaitlyn. We were doing our normal routine of eating and burping. The room was sort of hot, so I turned on the ceiling fan. Kaitlyn noticed the ceiling fan for the first time and just stared at it as it spun and spun around. She seemed fascinated. Nowadays, she loves staring at certain things, the TV is extremely fascinating to her, but we don't like her watching TV yet, so we constantly have to turn her back to it. Ceiling fans are ok.

3 Months

Can't believe it's been three months since K joined our family! It's been a pretty crazy 3 months - lots of changes...

Leo started his new job teaching science and math at Geneva School. He loves it! the classroom sizes are small, the students are great, and there's lots of administration and parent support. He even got to put his video making skills to work when his students made the movie - Odyssey, the last two weeks. They read it this year for Humanities.

I also started her new job as Director of Operations at Geneva School. I love my new job! The job came out of the blue and is totally a provision of God's. I had actually interviewed and met with the Head of School at Geneva about a year ago but at that time there were no positions open. I was all prepared to work part-time with COPGNY and work from home when the call came from Geneva. They needed an Operations Director and really wanted me to be there. So after much discussion and prayer - we decided I should take it. I love working with all the students, the families, and staff. It's been a steep learning curve but really rewarding.

K's now a little over 3 months old. she's been growing and changing so much. We can't remember what she was like 2 months ago! she smiles alot now, coos and "talks" to us all the time, sleeps through the night, and eats really well. she's now over 13 lbs and is in the 25 percentile for height and 75 percentile for weight. we call her our short fatty ;) Since both Leo and I are working, K has a nanny that takes care of her during the week. Mrs. Liu is such a blessing to us too! God really has provided in every way. It's hard to find a good nanny that you trust so we were so glad when Mrs. Liu said yes. She was the nanny to the boys of some friends of ours and they loved her. It's so great to be able to leave K with someone that we trust. We can see that Mrs. Liu really loves K too and is so gentle and good with her. Plus she cooks and cleans for us too... couldn't ask for more

here's some pics of K from the last 3 months (for more pics go to peggyandleo.smugmug.com - family, k 1 month, 2 months, 3 months) ... see how she's grown!! who does she look like now??

K at Month 1
<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Here's a look at what the last 3 weeks were like for her:

WEEK ONE
Kaitlyn spent her first week in the hospital. Since I had a c-section, we were at the hospital for 4 nights and was suppose to get discharged on Wednesday.

On Tuesday of that week, K's temperature dropped so the doctor's decided to put her in the CCN. So the CCN is not as serious as the NICU but requires that the baby stays there and is not allowed to leave until the doctors clear her. The doctors told us that a temperature drop could indicate an infection - so they did some blood tests (thank god everything came back normal). Since she was on the small side, they wanted to be cautious and decided to keep her for 48 hours - during this time they had her in an incubator and gave her antibiotics.

On Wednesday, I got discharged. So Leo and I, left in the afternoon and dropped things off at home. Then we went back to the hospital to feed her and spend time with her. We left after her 9PM feeding to go home and get some rest. She was doing well, so we thought we'd be taking her home Thursday evening.

On Thursday, I went back to the hospital first thing in the morning and hung out there the whole day. I wanted to be there to feed her and hang out with her. I spoke with the doctor and was told that she had to stay at least another 24 hours. They needed to take her out of the incubator and make sure she can regulate her own temperature for 24 hours. So I spend the day feeding her and hanging out in the patient lounge - Thank goodness for Oli who had lunch with me and hung out with me that afternoon! Leo and his mom joined us around 6PM. We left again that night after her 9PM feeding.

On Friday, I get to the hospital and see the night shift nurse on her way out. She says K did awesome overnight and it looks like she will be going home. I'm getting really excited and happy to be able to take her home. After speaking to the doctor, they're really optimistic that she will get discharged later that evening - she just has to regulate her temperature until about 5PM. So i hang out and pray that she keeps her temperature. At 530PM, Leo and I go to the CCN and are told she's being discharged. What a great feeling! They discharge her and we bundle her up and put her in the car seat and head home. It's so nice being home with her!

WEEK TWO
K's doing great at home. Sleeps well, poops ALOT, and eats well. She's not really latching on - so I pump and feed her breastmilk via bottle every 3 hours. On Tues of week 2, we go to her first pediatrician appt. He checks her out, pokes her, prods her, and pretty much looks at everything. He says - she's healthy and is really strong for her size. She even gained 5 oz!!! YAY!!!

What a week - she got to meet a bunch of aunties and uncles at the baby shower, take her first cab ride, go shop at buybuybaby, and take a walk with me to the post office.

WEEK THREE
K's still doing really great... She's a relatively easy baby. Not too fussy, not a big crier, and easily consoled when she's upset. She's eating more and more - her face is getting so big (cheeks and a double chin!!) She's much more alert now and actually is harder to put to sleep. She's discovering her hands and arms - she keeps sticking her hands in her mouth and touching her face. I love watching her sleep and wake up - she stretches all her limbs out now! We're now trying to change her to 4 hour feedings... she's now up to eating about 80mL per feeding. It's crazy how much she changes day to day, it's amazing watching her discover new things.

Thank you to everyone for your prayers, for visiting, for all the food, and love for us! It helps make the transition so much easier for us!

we'll try to keep updating pictures on our smugmug... you can see pics of her first month at: http://peggyandleo.smugmug.com/Family/Kaitlyn/9535911_NUqPx#641001206_eq6bU

Surprise!

We hit our 36 week mark on Friday, Oct 2... with just one more week to go before the baby was full term we knew we had to have most things ready. so in the last couple of weeks we've sorted through clothes, toys, baby stuff; stocked up on diapers, desitin, wipes, etc; and set up the pack and play, car seat, etc. THANK YOU to everyone who have shared so generously with us - we wouldn't have half the stuff without you!! All of your generosity and grace continue to amaze us!

So we had a quiet night at home and celebrated 3 years of marriage with a nice dinner at home and a movie. Went to bed around 11PM. Then around 12:20AM, I thought I felt liquid coming out (pretty much I thought I was wetting the bed) so I rush to the bathroom but I'm too late. By the time I get there, my underwear is soaked. I wake Leo up and say I think my water broke or I wet the bed and I'm really embarrassed. We just had a session with our doctor and she said if your water breaks you need to call immediately and head to the hospital. If we were unsure then to change to a clean pair of underwear and walk around for a couple of hours. If it's wet again, then you broke your water and need to go to the hospital.

I change my underwear and within 10 minutes it's a little wet. I proceed to call Oli and ask her is she thinks my water broke - she says... Yes, call your doctor. So we call Dr. Wu and leave a message with her answering service. We had been planning on packing our overnight bag a couple of days ago but hadn't gotten around to it. So while we waited for the doctor to call, we start packing. In the middle of packing, i have another gush of water - by this time, we are sure my water broke.

So Dr. Wu tells us to get to the hospital as soon as possible. We get there - they check to see if the baby is still breached. Unfortunately, she has not dropped and is still breach - we will be having a c-section. We think it'll be in the morning when they do the operation. BUT after about 30 minutes in the room, the anesthegiologist comes in and explains the anesthesia procedure. then says, we'll start in about 10 minutes. I was like - huh? what? now?.... i look at leo and say - are you ready? we're going to be parents in about an hour...

After about an hour of prep in the OR, leo joins us. 15 minutes later we hear the doctor say they see the baby's butt. next thing we know - we hear our baby girl cry and leo gets to go and take pictures of her. So a month early, we welcome our precious blessing Kaitlyn, Born on Sept 5 at 301AM, 5lbs 7 oz, 18 inches with a full head of dark black hair.
We thank God for his faithfulness to us, to our family and friends for all the calls and prayers, and our community here in NYC for taking care of us, visiting and providing for our needs. Time has really flown by... just 4 more weeks until we're full term and 8 more weeks until our due date.

We had a doctor's appointment yesterday - she doesn't anticipate the baby coming too early and is pretty confident that we'll make it to full term. yay!!!

The baby is doing well. Only thing is that she's in a breach position - she's been in this position this whole time. This makes the doctor think that she might just be tangled up and can't get into the right position for a natural birth. If she doesn't, then we're possibly looking a c-section. Praying that she'll decide to turn in the next few weeks!

The gestational diabetes diet is harder than I thought it'd be. Trying to be positive about it and really stick to it but i CRAVE sweets. Lately fruit tastes like heaven to me just because it's kind of sweet... just a few more weeks...

we discovered that if we cook then we have a lot more control on what I'm eating and it helps with keeping the count within range. So Leo's been great and cooking dinner every night and breakfast in the morning!! I usually have some form of egg and some cheese or turkey bacon in the morning, then steamed chk & veggies for lunch, then some protein and veggie for dinner. For snacks, I get some nuts or a small piece of fruit. This "diet" has really kept me healthy - i'm now only at a total weight gain of 2 lbs!!

We're starting to get stuff ready for the baby - who knew they required so many things!! It's fun though, planning together and talking through decisions and just getting ready to meet our lil girl.

Here's a pic of me at 32 weeks.

Doctor's Orders...

It's official - I have gestational diabetes. So much for being able to eat whatever you want while pregnant. Still can't complain considering how easy this pregnancy has been.

So apparently gestational diabetes is pretty common and usually goes away after the baby's born. I just have to really watch what I eat for the remainder of the pregnancy. :(

Doctor's Orders:
Finger Prick Glucose Test: 4 times a day (when I wake up and an hour after Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner)
Foods I can eat: Cooked meats, Veggies, Nuts, Fruits such as apples, pears, berries, bananas
Foods I shouldn't eat: Breads, Cereals, Starchy Veggies, Sweets/Desserts, Fruits such as mangos, pineapples, grapes

Downsides: I have to watch what I eat. I really want sweets and desserts ALL the time now. I constantly covet other people's food. ahhhhh I COVET!!!! I also have to prick fingers 4 times a day - it's not that painful but still hurts and I have trouble remembering to test myself an hour after I eat.

Upside: This is forcing me to eat super healthy. I'm not going to gain much weight for the remainder of the pregnancy. This is good for the baby. I know that the baby will come no later than Oct 2. In my situation, the doctor will induce by Oct 2 at the latest - they won't allow me to go over my due date.

So my doctor has suggested I eat some form of an egg every morning (i can also have some bacon or sausage with it). A snack twice a day (cheese, nuts, fruit). And protein and leafy greens/veggies for lunch and dinner. Nothing very saucy or creamy. If i really can't handle it, then i can have those skinny cow choc ice cream bars but i have to make sure it's not loaded with sugar alcohol (which is just as bad as sugar).

I've survived a week and only went over the limit a couple of times (stinking 1/2 pancake and chinese food!). 9 more weeks to go....

Week 28

I'm now starting my third trimester... the second was uneventful, went really smoothly, and was overall very enjoyable.

Highlights from my second trimester
*hearing the baby's heartbeat
*feeling the baby kick and move
*getting all my energy plus some back
*getting lots of love and support from friends and family

As I enter the third trimester, the reality of the baby's arrival is finally settling in. We've been so blessed by our church community - their generosity with baby items, advice, prayers, support... who knew that babies needed so many things or that there were so many options out there. It's also been so great having friends who've recently gone through the process and hearing their stories. Thank goodness for everyone's advice and research :)

I'm feeling HUGE and am suppose to get even bigger (boo)... I am physically exhausted - it takes so much effort to get off the couch and out of bed nowadays. I pee even more frequently (did not think this was possible), a flight of stairs knocks the wind out of me (it's a pretty amusing sight... me walking up the stairs - stopping at the top, crouching over and hyperventilating), i can't sleep through the night... sigh - all these things though are preparing me for what's to come... scary. Despite all this, I really can't complain - Leo and i have been so abundantly blessed this entire pregnancy! God is so GOOD!

The baby's doing really well! She should be a lil over 2 lbs now and about 14 inches in length. I feel every movement she makes now and Leo is actually able to feel them too. I'm still waiting for the moment when I can actually see her move (it's going to freak me out!).

Here's a pic of me at 28 weeks. see how tired i look...

Little Mr. Chens

I taught a movie making class this year at St. Lukes school, a private school in the West Village. One of the assignments that I gave my students was to come up with a commercial. This commercial had to take a product, present the problem, offer a solution, and show how the product has made everyone's life easier. In the original assignment, I told them that they HAD to use an already existing product. But when they came up with the idea of a Little Mr. Chen, I could not say no. It sounded too good to pass up.

The project allowed me to introduce use of a green screen and other special effects. Below is a picture of how big the tummy's getting. It's actually getting hard to get up from the couch without help and to walk up stairs or walk too fast without feeling winded and tired.

The baby's doing well. I started to feel her move and kick a couple of weeks ago. Now she moves around regularly early in the morning, midday, and then again around midnight. The kicking's kind of cool but when she turns or moves it feels really weird and alien. Leo still can't feel her kicks or moves though.

I'm also doing really well - this pregnancy has really been a blessing. No sickness or anything weird or alarming. Just tired a lot now since I'm not really sleeping through the night. Between the baby moving and me needing to pee all the time, I wake up every two to three hours most nights. Guess this is God's way of preparing me.

Leo's doing well too - see his video on his "training". It's really fun seeing him get excited and really trying to prepare for this baby. This baby girl is going to have her daddy wrapped around her fingers. I got to watch him change a diaper the other day and he's really getting the hang of it. He's also getting better at holding and putting a baby to sleep. yay!!!

Leo's Baby Training Part 1

Baby handling may come easy to some people, but the rest of us have to learn. I once learned how to change a diaper way back in middle school or something, but I have never done it to a real baby. Also, I've never picked up an infant before this year. Too scary man!

I had better start to learn some of this because in four months, it's baby time.

So my friends Mike and Oli had their baby Madelyn a couple of months ago. Mike is taking this month off to take care of the baby at home. I figured this is a perfect time to get my training in. Also, thinking as a videographer, I thought it might be interesting to document my learning experience. There might be some drama to capture. Well, the month's not over, but you can see what I've been up to.

Memorial Day Weekend

We're trying to live it up before the baby girl arrives. Half Way Through

Can't believe we're already halfway through this pregnancy! We went in for our 20 week ultrasound yesterday. It is incredible what you can see! We saw the profile, the skull, brain, bladder, diaphram, fingers, toes, arm bones, leg bones, nose, lips, heart, brain, etc... of course most of it I had no idea what we were looking at until the technician pointed it out.

Everything looks fine. The baby's growing and of an average weight and size. I think about 30 cm (butt to head - not including the legs) and 13 oz.

I still haven't gained any weight but my belly's grown! I think my weight is just shifting to my belly, which would be awesome if it kept doing that. You see a lil bump... still don't feel anything yet. I've been told that comes a bit later.

So far this pregnancy has been pretty easy (praise God!). Other than losing my appetite towards the end of the first trimester, I've had no morning sickness (no throwing up!).

The only tricky thing has been the weight gain. I lost weight in the first trimester and have now just gotten back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm ok with this but I think it's gotten Leo a bit worried that I'm not eating enough or getting enough nutrients. This shouldn't affect the baby - the baby's like a parasite, it'll take whatever it needs so it won't starve or go hungry :)

Waiting for Madelyn

This weekend, our friends Mike and Oli went into labor and gave birth to their daughter, Madelyn. Here's some of our sonogram/ultrasound pics to let you see how the baby's grown. We'll find out the baby's gender in about a month.

Week 6

Our first doctor's appointment. The doctor confirmed the pregnancy(yay!!). I went by myself since I didn't think they'd do a sonogram - thought it was just going to be a bunch of tests. During the sonogram, the doctor pointed out the heartbeat but I had no idea what she was talking about... I just trusted that she knew what she was doing. The baby looks nothing like a baby right now.

Baby Size: 1/4"

Week 9

Leo came with me to this appointment. They took a bunch of blood and had me do a urine test. When the doctor did the sonogram we were actually able to see the baby move and the baby's shape. At one point the baby squiggled/did a lil dance for us. The doctor warned us ahead of time tha tthe head will look unusually large - but assured us that this is very normal.

Baby Size: 1" - about the size of a grape

Week 12

We went to the hospital for our ultrasound. The baby actually looks like a real baby now. We can see arms, hands, legs, the profile - they even showed us images of both hemispheres of the baby's brain! It's crazy what you can see! They usually don't allow video cameras in the hospital, but the technician let Leo film a bit at the end.

Baby Size: 2"; 1/2 Ounce - about the size of a lime

The Rebirth of Home Video

I (Leo) recently bought a Canon HV 30. It’s small, but takes amazing video. Much easier to take around than my big prosumer camera, now I am able to take my video-making into everyday life.

I think that video has so much potential in everyday usage. As opposed to photography, video can incorporate sound, movement, and juxtaposition of images. But I keep seeing little segments on facebook that is just like 30 seconds of one thing. I don’t know about you, even though it’s cute sometimes, it can be way boring. I am hoping to change how people approach their home video.

Here's a trip we took to Seattle and Vancouver.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

As well as some of the things I made before this blog.

ErnieCon

Grace's Bday

Annie's Bday
